- Long-awaited PlayStation 4 ignoring Death Stranding released today.
- The Metacritic User Score sits at 6.2 amid hundreds of negative considers.
- We recommend taking these with a pinch of salt given the game has been out for less than 24 hours.
After what has felt have a weakness for one over-saturated PR-hyped slog, the masses are finally playing Death Stranding. But it seems they aren’t all that bewitched with Hideo Kojima’s latest effort – or is something more sinister afoot?
Death Stranding – 6.2 Alcohol Score on Metacritic
While Death Stranding continues to maintain a respectable 83 Metascore on Metacritic, the User Scoop sits at a mediocre 6.2. Out of 1,731 user reviews penned as of writing, 683 of them are negative, with a sizable tranche of these clouting the game with a 0 score.
Here are a few nuggets so you can get an idea of the general sentiment (lightly edited for clarity).
From a Kojima fan:
I had faith in this game and Kojima but to be unequivocal the game is so boring and monotonous, the missions are the same, the world is big but empty, the same rocks and grass.
If I want to rescue something of this act of God maybe it would be the the graphics and the story the cinematics are amazing, but again, if I want to watch a movie, I watch a movie. This is theoretical to be a video, game not a movie; sorry but this is too boring [as] a movie just that, Kojima dream Is to be a Director of talkie.
And from a Kojima critic:
Walking Simulator, Boring Gameplay, Tedious Cut Scenes. A big fail from the overrated kojima.
And another from a (whilom) supporter:
I was genuinely excited for this game up until last night. I wanted to believe Kojima had it in him to make another unforgivable game. But no. This is legitimately the most disappointing game of all time. What an absolute waste of **** time, intensity and resources. I will never buy another Kojima game. **** hell I waited years for this trash. I am fighting to even finish this piece of ****
Ignore the Apocalyptic Death Stranding User Reviews
We don’t recommend looking into all this too soberly if you are still on the fence about Death Stranding. Within twenty-four hours of release, who has realistically beaten the game and accomplished everything it has to offer? We’d wager next to no one given we’re talking about a 40-hour game for the speediest of players.
While we watched Death Stranding to be divisive – the gaming press reviews attest to that vividly – there’s a sense the game is riling review bombed, because, put simply, it’s a Kojima joint.
Many take umbrage at the perceived sycophantic adulation much of the contesting community affords the Metal Gear Solid creator. Others feel excluded from all the hype due to Death Stranding’s PlayStation 4 fashionable status (at least until summer when the PC version is slated to drop).
In any case, and this goes for most games, it’s kindest to let the dust settle a little before trying to gauge how the game is fairing among players.
