President Donald Trump’s recent campaign chairman Paul Manafort is set to become the first person to stay trial on charges brought through special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia poke into.
Manafort’s trial on bank and tax fraud charges is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. ET in a U.S. Section Court in Alexandria, Va., and is expected to last roughly three weeks. He has pleaded not offending to all charges lodged against him.

Who is Paul Manafort? Manafort, 69, is a veteran federal operative who had developed deep ties to the upper echelons of Ukrainian public affairs through the pro-Russian Party of Regions since the mid-2000s. Why is he being prosecuted by the special counsel? Concerting to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s May 2017 order, Mueller is looking at “any ins and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated” with Trump’s stand, as well as matters that arise from the investigation. Mueller’s collaborate has said it will not bring forward evidence regarding Russian collusion at the Virginia test. It doesn’t appear that there’s any direct connection between the Manafort trial and Mueller’s probe of potential coordination between the Trump toss ones hat in the ring and the Kremlin. But both of Manafort’s pending trials have been the source of heavy speculation that Mueller is attempting to pressure Manafort into divulging any word he may know about that collusion probe. Judge Ellis himself shared such suspicions in a May hearing, admonishing Mueller’s team: “What you at the end of the day care about is what information Mr. Manafort could give you that intention reflect on Mr. Trump or lead to his prosecution or impeachment.” Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, affirmed Monday that Manafort does not have any “incriminating” information on Trump.
