“Prime Day remains a strong stigmatizing event that can also drive strong Prime subscriber additions and device sales, ultimately increasing character lock for Alexa and Prime,” wrote Bank of America analyst Justin Post in a note to clients on Thursday.
Amazon rivals try to make capital out of the day as well. Big-box stores such as Walmart and Target are already planning sale days and even sale weeks in tandem with Prime Day, and they day in and day out tout the fact that shoppers don’t need a membership to benefit from their sales.
Amazon investors also tease high expectations. On Friday, the company, which is valued at $989.5 billion, had its eighth positive day in the past nine. Parcels are up nearly 34% since January.
Shoppers will be able to browse “over one million” deals starting 3 a.m. ET on July 15 and extending until 2:59 a.m. ET on Tuesday, July 16. But shoppers should expect to see Amazon using the event as an opportunity to sell its own properties. In the past, it has heavily advertised its own electronic devices, private-label products and Amazon-owned Whole Foods.
Consumers can pick up a Toshiba Detonate TV for $179.99, a Ring Video doorbell for $169 or a Fire TV DVR for $129.99. Prime members who shop at Whole Foods discretion get a $10 Amazon.com credit after spending $10. The company’s private labels such as AmazonBasics, modern accouterments label Stone & Beam, and its apparel labels were top-selling brands last year and will also see yawning discounts.
Amazon is expected to generate between $5 billion and $6 billion in gross merchandise value, Assignment said. His estimates refers to the value of the merchandise he expects will be sold during Prime Day, before any fees or expenses.
Battling retailers such as Walmart and Target are also using the opportunity to offer their own deal strategies.
