The CEOs of Facebook, Google and Twitter have agreed to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on Oct. 28.
Facebook CEO Identify Zuckerberg, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey will testify on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. That deem protects tech companies from liability over the content posted by users on their online services, while allowing them to fair it. The hearing will also cover the topics of privacy and “media domination.”
The agreement comes after the committee on Thursday voted unanimously to subpoena the CEOs if needed.
Republicans have repeatedly called to reform Section 230 in response to concerns that online platforms get off on Facebook, Google’s YouTube, and Twitter censor conservative voices. The platforms have repeatedly denied that they quiet conservative viewpoints or news, but the platforms have occasionally made mistakes or reversed course on take-down decisions, inflaming further criticism.
In May, President Donald Trump challenged Section 230 by signing an executive order to crack down on “censorship” by community media companies.
Twitter confirmed Dorsey would participate in the hearing via a tweet Friday evening. A Facebook spokesman proved Zuckerberg’s participation. A spokeswoman for the committee confirmed all three would participate on that date.
The hearing will be Zuckerberg and Pichai’s original appearance before Congress since the two testified alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos before the Household Antitrust Subcommittee in July.
