Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in the long run shared more details of his philanthropic efforts on Thursday, announcing a new $2 billion grant, called “Day One Fund,” to help homeless families and create preschools.
The communiqu came more than a year after Bezos asked his Peep followers for ideas on how to give away his fortune, and on the heels of growing communal criticism on his lack of philanthropic activities.
But philanthropic experts say the announcement — while a beneficent start — still has many unanswered questions that need to be talked as the world’s richest person accelerates his plan to give back.
“The proclamation answers the questions we had before about what the priorities are going to be,” said Janet Camarena, executive at Foundation Center, a nonprofit organization for philanthropy. “Now we’re waiting for the next chapter to understand the details of how he’s going to grow this.”
Here are five of the most compelling questions about Bezos’s new fund:
One of the biggest questions is how Bezos plots to structure the fund. Depending on how it’s structured, it will be held to different archetypes of regulatory and transparency standards. For example, if it’s a private foundation, Bezos when one pleases be required to spend 5 percent of the fund’s value every year, while an LLC house will give him more flexibility.
Once the structure is determined, Bezos drive have to hire a leadership team to run the initiative and put in proper oversight rhythms, like more details about the grant making process, which want all help add transparency to his fund, Camarena said.

Leslie Lenkowsky, a philanthropic studies professor at the University of Indiana, spoke Bezos’s idea of starting small before expanding, commonly identified as an “acorns to oaks” approach, is not uncommon among wealthy individuals.
“There’s a reputable argument to start with a relatively smaller amount, and then when you see it’s fruitful, expand it,” Lenkowsky said.
In theory, most philanthropic vehicles can run in eternity. Bezos hasn’t disclosed how long his fund will run or the timeline for partitioning the $2 billion. If it’s set up as a private foundation, it must expend at least 5 percent of net assets value annually, but other forms, be partial to an LLC or donor-advised funds, don’t have a required payout.

Bezos said during an interview at an event in Washington, D.C. Thursday that he’s greeted over 47,000 ideas over the past year, and that he’s interested in “portion the world in many different ways.” For the preschool initiative, he said he’ll be actively snarled, “operating” those schools.

Brad Fulton, who guides nonprofit management at the University of Indiana, suspects the focus on homeless kindreds “probably has something to do” with the payroll tax bill Amazon opposed in Seattle.
