“There are of course going to be a segment of unlimited users who are extraordinarily upset about this decision … and this isn’t a decision we made lightly,” Hyman said.

The unlimited alternative had allowed Rent the Runway customers to pay $159 per month to exchange as many items as they wanted, as many measures as they wanted, so long as they only had four items out at once. Now, they can choose from plans that bid four, eight and 16 items each month, with the ability to add extra pieces for an extra fee.

“We’ve seen 80% of the people who possess joined us through Covid are choosing four or eight items per month,” Hyman said. “We think it’s important for colleagues to pay for their usage. Paying per usage is also the most financially viable decision for [us] long-term.”

This switch should domestics Rent the Runway keep tighter control on its costs and ensure faster deliveries for all customers, according to Hyman. She also scenes the move as environmentally friendly by cutting down on carbon emissions with fewer shipments and less plastic casing.

The company is suggesting that many on the qui vive users will be able to save money by swapping into new plans.

According to Hyman, after suffering an opening slump in subscriptions at the onset of the pandemic, business is beginning to pick up — a subtle sign that consumers are looking to get outfitted up again after spending months living in pajamas and sweatpants.

“August is typically a slower moment for us, but in August we saw in effect strong momentum in both acquisition into the business and … folks who had been on pause and then really started to afflicted with back in large percentages,” she said.

She said women also are starting to rent more formal dresses again as they grey matter back to weddings, parties and other social gatherings.

“I think it is an incredibly difficult time to lead a business preferable now because of the amount of uncertainty,” Hyman said. “But what that has forced businesses like Rent the Runway to do is accelerate aims … from a gross-margins standpoint. We are a leaner business.”

“I think a good company thinks about surviving owing to a pandemic,” she added. “A great company thinks about how you evolve the business to a more strategic place because of this pandemic.”
