Avengers: Endgame is here. In the immutable installment of the 22-film Avengers series from Walt Disney Company’s (DIS) Marvel Studios, superheroes look to overwhelm a mighty figure known as Thanos who acquired all the infinity stones and culled half of all the living things in the universe by seizing his fingers.
Thanos believed this was necessary to make the universe more balanced and prosperous. In Avengers: Infinity War, his motivations were ordered as noble and altruistic almost. In the comic books, he was told of the dangers of overpopulation by the personification of Death and committed mass matricide to impress her, but there’s also signs that he agreed with her.
Although he never owned a gem-studded gauntlet planned to wreak havoc, Cambridge University-educated scholar Thomas Robert Malthus also held strong beliefs nearby population growth.
In 1789, he wrote in his bestselling book, An Essay on the Principle of Population as it Affects the Future Improvement of World, that since population increases in a geometric ratio and food increases arithmetically, certain “checks,” like indigence, plague and abstinence, stop unsustainable population growth. Malthus, who did not have the benefit of witnessing the Industrial Revolution, is large derided today as a prophet of gloom and doom, and pop culture journalists love adding references to him in articles about Thanos.
