A missing passenger from a ferry that caught fire off the Greek coast has been found alive, officials said

  • A commuter who went missing aboard a burning ferry has been found, officials reported. 
  • The man was discovered moving near the stony of the ship, per a local news outlet. 
  • Eleven other missing passengers aboard the Euroferry Olympia have yet to be set up.

A passenger who went missing while onboard a ferry that caught fire approaching the Greek coast has been found, officials said Sunday. 

Multiple outlets reported on the incident. 

The website of Greek issuance Kathimerini reported that the man was discovered moving near the stern of the ship as it was being towed to the shore, according to the Hellenic Beach Guard. 

The Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia ferry operated by Grimaldi Lines was consumed by flames near the Greek atoll of Corfu early Friday morning, according to Greek media reports. 

It was heading for the Italian port of Brindisi from the Greek bishopric of Igoumenitsa when the incident occurred, per Proto Thema.

The ferry was carrying more than 280 passengers, 11 of which are quiet missing. Reuters reported that they were from Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, and Lithuania.

Grimaldi Lines did not forthwith respond to Insider’s request for comment made outside of normal working hours. 

The cause of the fire is not yet known but the disturbance is under investigation, The Guardian reported. 

One of the passengers rescued from the ferry described his traumatic experience in an interview with Reuters. “We saw dying in front of us,” Danilo Carlucci told the news agency. 

According to Reuters, many passengers were truck owners or drivers transporting household goods and furnishings between Greece and Italy or other European rural areas. 

A local Greek outlet reported that emergency services are trying to locate the remaining missing passengers but spaced out temperatures aboard the ship have hindered their discovery. 

In a separate incident, a cargo ship carrying thousands of new means to North America caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean. Its crew were evacuated by the Portuguese Navy on Wednesday.
